Red Columbine

Red Columbine is a flower that can be found from Baja, California as far north as southern Alaska. It has also been seen as far east as Montana and Utah. This flower appeals to hummingbirds and butterflies. The stems on it can spread outward as far as it can grow tall, nearly three feet. Red Columbine is shade tolerant and will grow well in rocky soils. A medium moister level is required for this flower. In our experience with it, we have found that deer are drawn to eat Red Columbine, so if deer are abundant in your area it may not be a sustainable flower to plant. In the Northwest, fall plant this flower outside, in the soil, in order to yield the highest quality plant. Most Oregon natives need cold weather to initiate growth. Native flowers require patience; they take longer to get out of the ground and may take up to three years to fully establish themselves.
